People for Health project ends

Tamale, Dec 03, GNA- People for Health (P4H) project, an initiative to improve the management and performance of health systems, has been lauded for enhancing equitable health delivery in various districts across the country.

The P4H has also been commended for helping to strengthen the culture of volunteerism towards providing a comprehensive health service delivery in the country.

This came to light at a ceremony in Tamale to close out the P4H.

The close-out ceremony brought together key stakeholders from the beneficiary districts of the P4H to assess and evaluate the successes chalked under the project.

It was under the theme: “Showcasing and Strengthening Volunteerism for Equitable Health Service Delivery”.

The P4H began in 2016 and was implemented in 20 districts in the Northern, North East, Savannah, Eastern, Volta, Oti, and Greater Accra Regions, by SEND GHANA, Penplusbytes, both civil society organisations (CSOs), and Ghana News Agency with funding support from the United States Agency for International Development.

It sought to strengthen the organisational and institutional capacities of government and CSOs for mutual accountability in the management and performance of health systems, as well as mobilise and empower community members to demand better and equitable health care services in their areas.

The thematic areas of the P4H included malaria, nutrition, maternal and child health, family planning, and HIV and AIDS.

Mrs Elizabeth Tindana, Public Health Nurse at the Tamale Metropolitan Health Directorate said the P4H complemented the efforts of the District Health Management Teams to implement tailor-made activities for improved health care for the people.

Mrs Tindana added that the training and education were given to the community health management committees, and father-to-father support groups had significantly improved the delivery of health services in the communities.

Mr Tika Seidu Abdul-Razak, Senior Development Planning Officer, Yendi Municipal Assembly, said the P4H strengthened mutual collaboration amongst Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies in terms of information sharing that ensured rapid response to the health needs of the people.

Some stakeholders from Gushiegu and Central Gonja said the P4H facilitated the construction of babies’ weighing centres at Kpanashei and Domeabra in the Gushegu and the Central Gonja respectively to better serve families.

Mr Siapha Kamara, Chief Executive Officer of SEND GHANA underscored the need for volunteer activities to augment efforts of government and health care providers for equitable health care delivery in the country.

Awards were presented to various stakeholders including District Health Management Teams for excellent execution of the project in their jurisdictions, which improved health care delivery for the people.
