EU commended for helping to consolidate Ghana’s democratic gains

Dormaa-Ahenkro (B/R), Dec. 09, GNA – The European Union (EU) has been commended for its support to Ghana towards preventing electoral violence and consolidating the gains of the nation’s fledgling democracy and rule of law.

Dr Kwadjo Damuah Afari, a member of the Dormaa Traditional Council who made the commendation, asked the EU to sustain its “preventing electoral violence and providing security to the Northern Border Regions of Ghana”, project.

The EU is funding the NCCE to implement the project, which among other interventions seeks to prevent extremist activities and transnational and organized crime as well promoting human rights dignity, and rule of law in the country.

It further seeks to identify early warning signals of extremist violence and community surveillance to counter radicalism among the youth.

Dr Afari made the commendation during an Inter-Party Dialogue Committee (IPDC) meeting held at Dormaa-Ahenkro to reinforce the role of political parties to prevent political violence in the area.

The meeting was attended by political party representatives, youth groups, assembly members, civil society organisations, and traditional authorities.

He indicated that the implementation of the project had enlightened Ghanaians, making a significant impact as well, and expressed the hope the EU sustained the project to deepen the nation’s democracy.

Dr Afari said he was optimistic the project’s scope would be expanded to cover many communities in the country.

Miss Doris Gbongo, the Bono Regional Director of the NCCE underlined the need for a strengthened collaboration between all stakeholders to promote peace, unity, and social cohesion.

He said the IPDC meeting was also to provide a common platform for the stakeholders to deliberate on issues that threatened the prevailing peace of the country.

Mr Seth Broni Tagborloh, the Dormaa Central Municipal Director of the NCCE advised members of the IPDC to remain vigilant to help identify and address pertinent challenges that had the potential to disturb the peace of the area.
