Dr. Argumenu advocates for “one region, one stadium” policy

Accra,- Dr. Donald Cog Senanu Argumenu, a former Special Aide to late former President Jerry John Rawlings has appealed for the construction of at least one ultra-modern sports stadium in each region of the country.

He said the scope or the size of the stadium should be opened for a national discussion.

“The scope or size is something we could look at,” Dr Argumenu said, adding further that, “while this move would be satisfying principles of equity and fairness, it would also help in opening up the whole country in readiness to host international sporting events with ease.”

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Accra, Dr. Argumenu, who is also the Founder of Green Sports Academy, said having a modern stadium for each of the 16 Regions of Ghana would open up the entire country in readiness to host international sporting events.

“While this move would be satisfying principles of equity and fairness, it would also help in opening up the whole country in readiness to host international sporting events with ease,” Dr Argumenu emphasized.

The interview followed the completion of Green Sports Academy football scouting programme on Saturday at Ave-Xevi in the Akatsi North District of the Volta Region.

Thirty players were selected into the Academy at the end of the programme, to begin their professional football journey.

Participating football teams were drawn from Akatsi, Avevi, Ave-Xevi, Metsrikasa, Ave-Dakpa and Dzodze.

According to the sports administrator, the sorry state of sports infrastructure in the country especially in the countryside was paradoxical when compared to the abundance of talents and huge contributions these rural environments contribute to national development.

He said: “We can as a national strategy create zonal or regional structures to serve as a platform for effective and efficient sporting and sports administration.

“If Volta, Eastern and Oti could have centralised stadiums at least or state of the art sporting facilities, one can imagine the impact that will make on the lives of the citizenry and same applies to other areas with same deficits.

Dr. Agumenu opined that the strategic position of the Volta Region, being a gateway to about four West African countries should be harnessed to its fullest potential.

He added: “It’s my prayer that Volta just like Greater Accra, Ashanti, Northern, Central, Western and other regions experience international tournaments or have a state-of-the-art sports stadium not just a football field or parks. It will help open up the country.

The birth of Green Sports Academy, Dr Argumenu advocated, should spur the Government of Ghana and well-meaning Ghanaians on to turn attention to the Volta Region and other ill-equipped facilities across the country.
