Chinese rover Jade Rabbit 2 discovers “mysterious hut” on the moon

Beijing, Dec 7. (dpa/GNA) – The Chinese Jade Rabbit 2 rover has discovered a curious cube-shaped object on the far side of the moon.

Described as a “mysterious hut,” the indistinct object triggered wild speculation, the Xinhua news agency reported on Tuesday. Social media users compared it to the Guanghan Palace, home to the goddess of the moon according to ancient Chinese mythology.

Foreign experts spoke of a possible erratic boulder, a piece of stone or rim of a crater.

The object lies about 80 meters away from the rover’s current location in the Von Karman crater. It was already detected in November, but the discovery only became known now.

“A likely explanation for the shape would be a large boulder which has been excavated by an impact event,” Chinese space programme expert Andrew Jones recently wrote on Twitter.

The solar-powered Jade Rabbit 2 is now to take a close look at the object. However, the journey across the lunar soil is expected to take two to three lunar days, or two to three months, the Chinese science channel Our Space reported on the messaging service Weibo.

“It’s not an obelisk or aliens, but certainly something to check out,” Jones said.
