Accra:Zeepay Ghana Limited, along with its Managing Director Andrew Takyi-Appiah, has initiated legal proceedings against MTN Ghana and Mobile Money Fintech Limited. The lawsuit, filed at the High Court in Accra, demands GH¢15 million in damages due to an alleged failure to correct the registration of a corporate mobile money wallet, which was mistakenly registered in the CEO’s name instead of the company's.
According to Ghana Web, the lawsuit centers on an MTN Mobile Money corporate wallet, which Zeepay asserts was erroneously registered under Takyi-Appiah’s name. The company contends that despite requests dating back to November 2023, MTN Ghana and Mobile Money Fintech Limited failed to rectify this error. Zeepay claims that the registration anomaly has persisted despite the submission of appropriate know-your-customer documents and repeated reminders up to August 2026.
The plaintiffs argue that the defendants breached their contractual obligations by not addressing the registration issue. They also dispute the justification provided by the defendants, which linked the wallet's registration to Takyi-Appiah's role as its handler, asserting that this does not equate to ownership. Zeepay is asking the court to declare the registration wrongful, order the correction of the records, and award compensation for the alleged breach of contract.
In addition to the GH¢10 million sought in general damages, Takyi-Appiah is pursuing GH¢5 million in exemplary damages, citing pain, distress, and reputational harm from the situation. Zeepay is also claiming unspecified general damages and seeking legal costs and any further relief deemed appropriate by the court.
The lawsuit follows a prior judgment by the High Court in Accra, where Zeepay and Takyi-Appiah were ordered to pay businessman Michael Yusuf over failed fund transfers. Additionally, on July 14, 2026, the Bank of Ghana revoked Zeepay’s Dedicated Electronic Money Issuer licence due to regulatory breaches. The new case against MTN Ghana and Mobile Money Fintech Limited is separate from these previous incidents and revolves around the alleged misregistration of Zeepay’s corporate wallet.
