Accra: The Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF) has hosted a delegation from Zambia to examine Ghana's approach to managing mineral wealth via a dedicated sovereign minerals investment fund. The visit underscores the growing bilateral cooperation following recent discussions between Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama and Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema.
According to Ghana Web, the 12-member Zambian delegation was led by Mwaka Mukubesa, the Permanent Secretary for Budget at the Ministry of Finance and National Planning (MoFNP). The delegation also included officials from various Zambian ministries and was welcomed by members of the MIIF Board.
Richard Kwame Asante, Chairman of the MIIF Board, highlighted the shared vision of Ghana and Zambia to leverage mineral resources for economic transformation under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). He emphasized the importance of strategic regional initiatives and sound policies in unlocking Africa's natural resource potential.
MIIF's Chief Executive Officer, Justina Nelson, provided an overview of the Fund, which was established under the Minerals Income Investment Fund Act, 2018. She explained that MIIF invests Ghana's mineral royalties to maximize long-term value and works closely with national agencies to ensure efficient royalty mobilization.
Nelson further explained MIIF's investment strategy and governance framework, noting efforts to position the Fund as a globally recognized sovereign minerals investment fund. The visit is part of ongoing engagements, initiated by Zambia's High Commissioner to Ghana in 2025, to strengthen cooperation in mineral resource governance.
Mwaka Mukubesa expressed appreciation for Ghana's openness in sharing its experiences. She emphasized Zambia's commitment to leveraging its mineral wealth, citing recent macroeconomic improvements and reforms aimed at increasing copper production and establishing the Zambia Minerals Investment Corporation.
The Zambian delegation explored MIIF's governance structure, investment processes, and transparency systems, with particular interest in Ghana's transition to managing mineral royalties through a sovereign wealth fund. The visit concluded with technical sessions focused on investment management and potential long-term partnerships for sustainable mineral resource management.
