Winneba: Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, Minority Leader in Parliament, has urged Ghana's youth to look beyond their academic degrees and take responsibility for leading the country. He emphasized the need for innovation and accountability beyond academic achievements.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Afenyo-Markin made these remarks on Saturday during his keynote address at the 'Beyond the Degree Conference 2026' held in Winneba. He expressed concern over the high rate of youth unemployment in Ghana, referencing a report by the Ghana Statistical Service which shows youth unemployment remains disproportionately high compared to other age groups.
"The government, through the Minister of Health, informed us last year that it cannot employ all 74,000 trained nurses by the end of 2026. Similarly, thousands of teacher trainees remain at home, waiting for opportunities that have not materialised," he noted. Mr. Afenyo-Markin, also the New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament for Effutu Constituency, stressed that education should be regarded as more than just classroom learning or obtaining a certificate. It should be seen as a foundation for responsible citizenship and leadership.
He conveyed that the true purpose of education extends beyond academics, as it shapes individuals to think critically, act ethically, and work diligently. He encouraged the youth to develop competence, integrity, and resilience, urging them to take the initiative in shaping the country's future.
"Ghana needs a generation of young leaders who are committed to shaping institutions, influencing policy and holding systems accountable," he stated. Mr. Afenyo-Markin also underscored the importance of entrepreneurship, technical skills, and digital innovation in creating opportunities for the youth, asserting that the future of Ghana must be built not only by job seekers but also by job creators.
