World Prematurity Day Marked at Korle Bu with Focus on Care for Preterm Babies

Accra, NICU Soldiers, an advocacy blog for Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU), joined hands with Ghandour Cosmetics Limited to commemorate World Prematurity Day (WPD) at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra. The event was dedicated to raising awareness about the challenges preterm babies and their families face.

According to Ghana News Agency, a Senior Specialist Pediatrician at the KBTH NICU, premature babies often struggle with maintaining warmth, feeding, and fighting infections. The theme of this year’s WPD, ‘Small actions, BIG IMPACT: Immediate skin-to-skin care for every baby everywhere,’ emphasized the importance of Kangaroo Mother Care, especially for premature infants. Dr. Ahor-Essel praised the efforts of NICU Soldiers and Ghandour Cosmetics in supporting the event and urged the public to end stigma against preterm babies.

Ms. Yasmin Mohammed, a Clinical Psychologist, highlighted the need for supporting parents with babies in the NICU, as it helps reduce stress and mental health issues. Ms. Victoria Abaka, Brand Manager at Ghandour Cosmetics, explained that their participation was part of the company’s commitment to social responsibility and customer care. In support of the cause, Ghandour Cosmetics distributed care packages to parents with children in the NICU at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
