Accra: A woman claiming to be a close relative of Nana Yaw Agyei Ahyia, the Ghanaian student who died under mysterious circumstances in Latvia, has publicly apologized to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for her previous accusations against the ministry. She had alleged that the ministry demanded money from the bereaved family and provided a fake airline ticket to the deceased's mother, which prevented her from joining a government delegation to Latvia.
According to Ghana Web, the woman had initially accused the ministry of turning away Nana Agyei's mother at Kotoka International Airport due to an invalid ticket. These allegations have since been refuted by the ministry. She claimed that Nana Agyei's mother was invited to travel with the delegation but was stopped by officials who informed her that the ticket was fraudulent.
In a recent video seen by GhanaWeb on February 3, 2026, the woman clarified that her statements were made out of frustration and emotional distress over the situation. She expressed that there was no intention to malign the Foreign Affairs Minister or the ministry.
She requested understanding and expressed gratitude for the ministry's efforts in seeking justice for Nana Agyei. She also acknowledged the support provided by the Foreign Affairs Minister during this difficult time.
Nana Agyei Ahyia was an 18-year-old Ghanaian student at Riga Technical University in Latvia, where he was pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering (Adaptronic). He passed away on June 4, 2025, under circumstances that his family considers suspicious. Prior to his death, he had sent a voice note claiming he was poisoned.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has traveled to Latvia with a delegation to investigate the circumstances of Nana Agyei's death. The team includes senior ministry officials, a forensic expert, and a pathologist to assist in the fact-finding mission.
