Accra: The Western/Western North Regional Branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has announced the launch of its 2026 Media and Corporate Impact Awards. These awards aim to celebrate the vital role of journalism in promoting accountability, amplifying community voices, and driving sustainable development within the Western and Western North regions.
According to Ghana News Agency, the awards have been introduced under the theme: 'Reporting Progress, Investing in People.' They will honor journalists whose work has influenced public discourse, affected policy, promoted transparency, and documented the development journey of the regions. Scheduled for September 5, 2026, the ceremony is sponsored by the Damang Gold Mine and will also recognize corporate institutions that have transformed communities and improved lives through their investments and social interventions.
Mr. Desmond Cudjoe, the Western Regional Chairman of the GJA, highlighted the crucial role of journalism as a bridge between development and the people. He emphasized that progress is meaningful when citizens are informed, empowered, and able to hold duty-bearers accountable. He acknowledged the challenges journalists face, including working under difficult conditions with inadequate resources and remuneration.
Mr. Cudjoe called for greater investment in journalists, stressing that improved welfare, safety, training, and professional development would ultimately strengthen democracy, accountability, and national development. He expressed hope that the Media and Corporate Impact Awards would not only celebrate outstanding achievements but also inspire higher standards of journalism and encourage responsible corporate citizenship.
He also expressed gratitude to Damang Gold Mine for their commitment to promoting media excellence and recognizing corporate contributions to community development. Mr. Cudjoe reiterated the value of the partnership and the anticipation of celebrating excellence and inspiring responsible journalism.
Nana Nteboa Pra IV, the Divisional Chief of Himan-Prestea and chair of the occasion, urged stakeholders to address the challenges faced by journalists. He noted that attacks, intimidation, and poor working conditions undermine democracy and press freedom, and weaken public confidence. He also encouraged media owners to prioritize employee welfare and invest in professional growth.
Addressing the rise of digital media, Nana Nteboa Pra emphasized the importance of factual, balanced, and responsible reporting. He urged journalists to continue highlighting opportunities, successes, and challenges in the Western and Western North regions.
The launch featured solidarity messages from state institutions, traditional authorities, corporate organizations, civil society groups, and development partners, who praised journalists for their dedication despite numerous challenges. The GJA also announced competitive award categories covering sectors such as Infrastructure, Fisheries, Cocoa and Agriculture, Oil, Gas and Energy, and others.
The awards will recognize original journalistic works produced between June 2025 and July 2026. Additionally, the Corporate Impact Awards will honor organizations demonstrating exceptional commitment to sustainable development through initiatives like environmental stewardship, social investment programs, and corporate social impact.
