Obuasi:Mining companies from across West Africa have gathered in Obuasi to build a stronger regional alliance focused on mine rescue and emergency response, with a unified dedication to ensuring the safety of all mine workers.
According to Ghana News Agency, the inaugural West Africa Mine Rescue and Emergency Response Competition is being hosted by AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine. This event has attracted mining firms from Ghana, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, and Senegal to evaluate their preparedness, improve technical skills, and enhance cooperation in handling mining emergencies.
The five-day event, themed 'Together Saving Lives Through Preparedness and Excellence,' aims to shift mine rescue from a single company's responsibility to a collective regional commitment. Dr. Samuel Boakye Pobee, Managing Director of AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, emphasized the importance of building a network of mine rescue professionals to share expertise and strengthen technical capabilities across the region.
Dr. Pobee remarked that the initiative should lead to stronger capabilities, deeper partnerships, and practical commitments to safeguarding lives, beyond just winning trophies. He stressed that the mining industry's success should also be measured by its ability to protect workers and surrounding communities.
Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey, CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, highlighted the industry's need to ensure that workers return home safely as a fundamental aspect of mining operations. He pointed out that the competition provides an opportunity for mining companies to assess their capabilities, identify gaps, and improve their collective emergency response.
The competition is set to bolster cooperation among the participating countries and promote the creation of a regional mine rescue network to effectively manage emergencies throughout the West African mining industry. It underscores the industry's acknowledgment of the shared responsibility to protect human life, despite competing for resources and investment.
