Wanlov Kubolor Alleges Profit Motives Behind the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill

Accra: Ghanaian musician and filmmaker Wanlov The Kubolor has criticised the proposed anti-LGBTQ+ bill, alleging that some individuals supporting the legislation are motivated by profit rather than morality. Speaking in an interview on MX24 on May 7, 2026, the artiste claimed that certain politicians and religious groups backing the bill could benefit financially if more people are imprisoned under the law.

According to Ghana Web, Wanlov stated that the issue goes beyond religion and morality, arguing that there are economic interests tied to the enforcement of such laws. He noted, "They're fine with pushing this agenda because there's a lot of money involved at the end of the day. If people are being randomly pointed at and being labelled as queer and being jailed for that, that's a section of the population that can be found in prisons for cheap labour."

Wanlov further alleged that some churches and politicians could potentially benefit from prison-related investments. He suggested that these entities might have financial stakes in prisons, leading to monetary gains from the incarceration of individuals under the bill. "These churches and MPs can have shares in these prison like stock and be making money from it," he shared.

The musician expressed concern that the moral arguments used against LGBTQ+ individuals often serve as a facade for economic interests. He questioned the authenticity of such moral stances, pointing out that those preaching morality are not without flaws themselves. "Nobody is perfect, so why would someone want to jail another person because of something they disagree with, which is not infringing on their personal rights," he added.
