Walewale: The Member of Parliament for Walewale, Dr. Mahama Tiah Abdul-Kabiru, has openly criticized the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) for what he described as a selective and inadequate response to the recent incidents involving the assault on civilians and a journalist in Walewale.
According to Ghana Web, Dr. Abdul-Kabiru expressed his discontent in a social media post on January 28, 2026, accusing the military of neglecting the plight of numerous civilians who were allegedly assaulted and had their vehicles destroyed during the incident on January 26, 2026. He argued that the GAF's press release, which was issued on January 28 and primarily focused on the alleged assault of a journalist, failed to provide a comprehensive account of the situation.
Dr. Abdul-Kabiru highlighted that the response from the Ghana Armed Forces ignored the experience of civilians who suffered during the incident, suggesting a lack of acknowledgment for the wider impact of the events. He emphasized the need for justice to be extended to all victims, not just the journalist involved.
He stated, "The Ghana Armed Forces have decided to respond and in doing so they have ignored the plight of the scores of civilians who were equally assaulted and their vehicles destroyed. This selective amnesia and crassness of the full account of the unrefined atrocities against civilians in Walewale township is strikingly and stinkingly noticeable."
Dr. Abdul-Kabiru further criticized the conduct of the soldiers, labeling it as "barbaric, unprofessional and infantile," and warned that such actions were damaging public trust while creating an atmosphere of fear among residents. He dismissed any attempts to link the military's actions to recent attacks on buses in the region, considering such explanations as misleading.
The MP urged the Acting Minister for Defence to ensure accountability and transparency in the investigation, insisting that the military's communication should not overshadow the suffering of civilians. He called for professionalism from the Ministry of Defense in addressing the situation, advocating for justice for all affected individuals.
