Accra: The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has annulled the entire results of 105 candidates who participated in the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) due to examination malpractice. This decisive action reflects the council's commitment to maintaining the integrity of its examination processes.
According to Ghana Web, the council also invalidated the subject results of 496 candidates following investigations into various irregularities identified during the examination and the subsequent marking of scripts. Furthermore, WAEC has withheld the subject results of 119 candidates and the overall results of 48 others as further investigations are underway. These decisions were sanctioned by the 37th Meeting of the Final Awards and Examiners' Appointment Committee for the 2026 BECE.
The council disclosed that the subject results of 2,722 candidates from 229 schools have also been put on hold for additional scrutiny. The fate of these results will be determined based on the outcomes of the ongoing investigations, expected to conclude by August 31, 2026. Candidates whose results have been either cancelled or withheld are advised to visit WAEC's irregularities portal for detailed information regarding the reasons for the sanctions and the subsequent steps they should take.
WAEC has also issued a warning to the public to remain vigilant against fraudsters who claim to offer services to upgrade examination results for a fee. The council emphasized that WAEC results are secure and can be verified through official channels, urging stakeholders to disregard any such fraudulent claims.
The examination saw participation from a total of 620,243 candidates, comprising 304,415 males and 315,828 females from 20,789 schools, conducted across 2,237 centers nationwide. Among them, 3,601 candidates were marked absent.
