Keta: The Vodza Ecotourism Initiative (VEI), in partnership with the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Naval Training Command, Nutekpor (NAVTRAC), and other collaborators, has officially launched the 2026 Vodza Easter Regatta in the Keta Municipality. This event aims to enhance tourism and foster community-based economic development within the Keta enclave and the wider Volta Region.
According to Ghana News Agency, the launch signifies the fifth iteration of the Vodza Easter Regatta, which has grown into a significant cultural and sporting festival for the local coastal community. Mr. Wisdom Seade, the Municipal Chief Executive for Keta, highlighted that the event provides an opportunity for the municipality to leverage its natural resources for the advancement of ecotourism.
Mr. Seade emphasized the region's natural assets, including its beautiful beaches, islands, a clear lagoon, and captivating landscapes, which have the potential to attract both domestic and international visitors. He remarked that by investing in these natural endowments and promoting them effectively, the municipality could generate employment for its youth and stimulate economic activity.
Additionally, Mr. Seade pointed out that the municipality boasts a rich cultural heritage, including music, dance, and an assortment of nutritious local foods, which visitors can experience during the Regatta and associated tourism activities. He assured that the Assembly is dedicated to supporting and promoting the event while encouraging private investment in tourism-related enterprises such as water sports facilities, recreational resorts, and hospitality services.
Mr. Benjamin Anane Nsiah, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority, praised the Vodza community for maintaining the Regatta for five years and for advancing community-led ecotourism. He highlighted the importance of grassroots innovation, such as the Regatta, in driving local economic development by creating opportunities for fishmongers, artisans, fishermen, tour guides, and other service providers.
Mr. Nsiah reiterated the Ghana Tourism Authority's commitment, under the leadership of Madam Abla Dzifa Gomashie and with support from President John Dramani Mahama, to promoting local tourism and empowering communities to shape their tourism narratives. He revealed plans to develop Vodza into a tourism hub by establishing various visitor facilities, including washrooms, a car park, eateries serving local cuisine, curio shops, and a tourism information center.
Furthermore, Mr. Nsiah stated that the Authority would organize training programs for youth, fisherfolk, and women in tour guiding and other skills along the tourism value chain. He envisioned a comprehensive tourism corridor in the southern Volta Region, linking attractions such as Fort Prinzenstein in Keta and the Hedzranawo slave heritage site in Denu.
FCPO Prince Abotsi, the Commander Coxswain at the Naval Training Command in Nutekpor, emphasized that the Regatta represents more than a sporting event, celebrating the community's maritime heritage and spirit of sportsmanship. He assured that naval physical training instructors would assist in ensuring safety, discipline, and order during the event.
Mrs. Bridget Katsriku, the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Vodza Ecotourism Initiative, described the launch as historic, noting that it marked the first formal launch of the Regatta since its inception five years ago. She explained that the initiative was partly created to provide alternative livelihoods for fishing communities affected by declining fish stocks in the Atlantic Ocean.
Mrs. Katsriku asserted that the Regatta had evolved from a simple community boat competition into a credible tourism product capable of attracting domestic tourists and diaspora visitors. She emphasized that the partnership with the Ghana Tourism Authority represents a significant turning point for the initiative, following an assessment that identified the Keta and Anloga enclave as a potential integrated cultural ecotourism destination.
Community members, traditional leaders, youth groups, and cultural drumming groups from Vodza and neighboring communities attended the launch, underscoring the event's significance for the region.
