Potomac: Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has engaged with members of the Ghanaian community in Potomac, Maryland in the United States of America. They were hosted by Mr. Victor Smith, Ghana's Ambassador to the United States.
According to Ghana News Agency, the Vice President acknowledged that Ghanaians abroad continued to play an important role in the national economy. She noted that the Government remained mindful of their interests, appreciated their sacrifices, and took pride in their positive projection of the image of Ghana.
The Vice President addressed the challenging economic conditions inherited by the Government and the sacrifices needed to stabilize the country. She emphasized that with decisive leadership, prudent management, and the resilience of the Ghanaian people, the government is gradually restoring macroeconomic stability. Economic growth had exceeded expectations; inflation had eased, and the Cedi had stabilized.
She highlighted the Government's commitment to fiscal discipline by operating with fewer ministers, with several holding dual responsibilities without deputies. Through ministry visits, she received firsthand reports on their work, challenges, and progress. The Government is prioritizing interventions that serve the common good, including investments in infrastructure, funding for Senior High Schools, and expanded access to the National Health Insurance Scheme.
The Vice President also mentioned increased resources for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies through the District Assemblies Common Fund, with clear guidelines to ensure these resources meet community-specific needs. She highlighted the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (MahamaCares) and the Free Primary Healthcare initiative aimed at treating noncommunicable diseases and strengthening preventive healthcare.
Vice President Opoku-Agyemang discussed the Government's efforts to address the skills and employment needs of young people through the Youth Employment Agency and other programs. She noted reforms in the energy, industry, and petroleum sectors to improve efficiency, strengthen local capacity, and support reliable power generation and economic productivity.
As Ghana moves towards completing its debt restructuring and strengthens mechanisms like the Sinking Fund to prepare for future shocks, the Government remains focused on confronting challenges honestly and building greater economic resilience. She encouraged the Ghanaian community to continue contributing to nation-building efforts.
