Accra: The Minority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has alleged that Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has selected the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, as her running mate for the upcoming 2028 general elections. During a press conference on January 26, 2026, Afenyo-Markin revealed that the Vice President regards Haruna, who is also the Member of Parliament for Tamale South, as the most suitable partner for the electoral challenge.
According to Ghana Web, Afenyo-Markin further claimed that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) is currently experiencing internal divisions. He stated that the party is in a situation where both the NDC and the presidency are fielding separate candidates for the elections. Afenyo-Markin criticized the party's leadership, suggesting that power struggles are causing discord.
He also mentioned that the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, intends to contest the elections with Fifii Kwetey, the NDC General Secretary, as his running mate. Meanwhile, a new opinion poll conducted by political analyst Mussa Dankwa indicates that Haruna Iddrisu is the most preferred potential presidential candidate within the NDC for the 2028 general elections.
The poll, which analyzed voter preferences based on educational background, highlighted Haruna Iddrisu's strong performance against key party figures, including NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, and Chief of Staff Julius Debrah. Haruna Iddrisu leads in several educational categories, particularly among respondents with no formal education, where he secured 36% support.
The poll also reveals that Haruna Iddrisu is the leading choice among junior high school (JHS) and tertiary-educated respondents, though Asiedu Nketiah narrowly tops among senior high school (SHS) respondents. Despite this competition, the NDC has reiterated its commitment to maintaining a two-term presidential limit, as internal debates over leadership continue to unfold.
