Accra: Upper Manya Krobo: The Upper Manya Krobo Constituency branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has formally requested President John Dramani Mahama to consider appointing the area's Member of Parliament (MP), Bismack Tetteh Nyako, as a Minister of State. The appeal is rooted in longstanding developmental challenges and the strategic need to strengthen the party's political presence in the constituency.
According to Ghana Web, Alhaji Moro Yakubu, Chairman of the Upper Manya Krobo NDC Constituency, addressed a press conference highlighting the political and developmental obstacles faced by the constituency despite its loyalty to the NDC. He pointed out that the constituency has not received equitable benefits from national development initiatives.
Yakubu emphasized that since the inception of the Fourth Republic in 1992, no individual from Upper Manya Krobo has been appointed to a significant government role. He stated that appointing their MP as a Minister of State would remedy this and align with benefits enjoyed by other Krobo constituencies.
The chairman argued that appointing Nyako would catalyze development in the rural constituency and bolster the NDC's chances in future elections. With approximately 95% of its residents engaged in farming and fishing, enhanced representation could address critical infrastructure deficits.
He outlined issues such as poor road networks and inadequate access to potable water as major challenges. He noted that the MP has been addressing these with limited resources from the Common Fund, but a ministerial role could significantly expand these efforts.
Yakubu also highlighted Nyako's qualifications, noting his professional background as a lawyer and chartered accountant, deeming him well-suited for ministerial responsibilities.
In response to controversy, District Chief Executive Emmanuel Kwesi Lawer denied claims that the chairman and executives distanced themselves from a youth-led advocacy for the MP's appointment, affirming the constituency's continued expectation for this promise to be fulfilled.
Previously, in February 2025, NDC youth in Upper Manya Krobo called for Nyako's ministerial appointment, citing campaign promises and local developmental needs. They argued that fulfilling this promise would maintain trust and attract necessary resources for progress.
The latest call for a ministerial appointment highlights increasing expectations for government attention and development in the constituency. Local party leaders see this as a strategic move to enhance access to national resources and strengthen the party's political position ahead of future elections.
