Gaza: Ramiz Alakbarov, Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process and UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, emphasized that Gaza continues to endure profound uncertainty and significant human suffering. Alakbarov briefed the 15-member UN Security Council, providing an update on the implementation of resolution 2334 concerning settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, Alakbarov concentrated much of his briefing on the implementation of resolution 2803 (2025). This resolution, endorsed by the Council, supports the United States-facilitated Comprehensive Peace Plan in Gaza, authorized in October 2025, and allows for the deployment of an international stabilization force. Alakbarov stressed the necessity of addressing the legitimate needs, concerns, and aspirations of the people of Gaza through the full implementation of this resolution, noting the continued volatility in both Gaza and the West Bank.
Alakbarov reported that Israeli air strikes and military operations in Gaza have resulted in further fatalities, with the Gaza Health Ministry indicating that more than 1,000 individuals have been killed since the ceasefire. He highlighted that Israeli forces have expanded their territorial control, now covering approximately 70 percent of the Strip, which diminishes the space available for civilians and exacerbates their living conditions amid insecurity and violence.
Addressing the ceasefire declared eight months ago, Alakbarov pointed out that Gaza remains mired in uncertainty and immense human suffering. He condemned the ongoing civilian casualties, including women and children, and expressed concern over the increasing calls for a resumption of widespread hostilities in the region.
Regarding the West Bank, Alakbarov noted that the situation continues to worsen, with Israeli military activities ongoing in Jenin, leading to the displacement of Palestinians. He expressed alarm at the escalating violence and criticized officials who glorified violence and engaged in provocations, incitement, and inflammatory rhetoric.
Alakbarov also condemned Israel's plan to establish military facilities at the Sheikh Jarrah compound of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in East Jerusalem, urging Israel to reverse this decision.
