University of cape coast: The Students' Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has recently commissioned three automated water stations aimed at improving access to potable water for students on campus.
According to Ghana News Agency, the projects, which were constructed at a cost of GHS600,000, have been strategically installed at the New Lecture Theatre (NLT), Sandwich Lecture Theatre (SLT), and Parliament House. These locations were chosen for the convenience of students who frequent these areas. The automated facilities are designed to provide free access to water through prepaid electronic cards issued by the SRC.
During the official inauguration of the projects, Professor Denis Worlanyo Aheto, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of UCC, applauded the SRC leadership for their initiative in addressing water accessibility issues on campus. He emphasized the importance of responsible usage of the facilities by students and encouraged the newly elected SRC executives to ensure their maintenance for the benefit of future cohorts.
Mr. Kwame Ntiamoah Ntim, President of the 63rd SRC, explained that the initiative was part of the SRC's broader commitment to promoting healthy living and alleviating the financial burden on students who frequently purchase sachet and bottled water. He highlighted the digitization of the water system, which allows access solely through a preloaded electronic card provided by the SRC.
Each student has been allocated approximately 1.5 liters of drinking water per day each semester, Mr. Ntim explained. He further elaborated that students would receive a card with a specific water allocation, and once exhausted, they could recharge the card to continue accessing water.
Mr. Ntim also noted that the installed facilities are advanced purification systems utilizing Ultraviolet technology to ensure the water's safety for consumption.
