Accra: Several chapters of the Technical University Teachers' Association of Ghana (TUTAG) have officially petitioned the Association's leadership, urging the immediate organization of an Extraordinary National Delegate Congress. The purpose of this congress is to consider a proposed motion for the impeachment and removal of the current National Executives.
According to Ghana Web, the petition, which is dated September 7, 2026, was sent to the Chairman of TUTAG. It bears the signatures of local executives from multiple technical universities throughout Ghana. The petitioners argue that their request aligns with Articles 12 and 14 of the TUTAG National Constitution, which provide for the convening of an Emergency Delegate Congress and recognize Congress as the Association's highest decision-making authority.
The petitioners have raised concerns about the conduct of the current National Executive body, highlighting what they describe as "alleged breaches of constitutional provisions related to adherence to the oath of office and the supremacy of Congress." Furthermore, they have expressed dissatisfaction with what they term as the National Executives' 'unproductive approach' in engaging with the government and relevant agencies, which they claim has resulted in several unresolved issues affecting the Association's members.
The growing agitation among members across various campuses and the subsequent loss of confidence in the current National Executive have been cited as reasons for the petition. "It is therefore our considered position that Congress, which is the highest decision-making body of our Association, be given the opportunity to deliberate on these concerns and determine the way forward," the petition states.
The proposed Extraordinary Congress, as outlined in the petition, aims to specifically deliberate and decide on a motion for the impeachment and removal of the National Executives in line with the TUTAG Constitution. The petitioners have called on local executives to consider the letter as a formal constitutional notice necessitating the convening of the Extraordinary Congress.
The petitioners have also requested that prompt measures be taken to inform all TUTAG chapters about the date, venue, time, and modalities of the proposed congress. Among the notable signatories of the petition are the Chairman of Accra Technical University (ATU), Professor Hanson Obiri Yeboah, and the Vice-Chairman, Samuel Amo Blay. Other representatives include those from Bolgatanga Technical University, Cape Coast Technical University, Dr Hilla Limann Technical University, Koforidua Technical University, Kumasi Technical University, Sunyani Technical University, Takoradi Technical University, and Tamale Technical University. The petition was copied to all Congress members and the current National Executives of TUTAG.
