Tamale: Let us go a little step further, or even backwards, beyond the cheap politics of project ownership and a grassroots scramble for bites of an ambitious and purposeful project, borne out of passion, and a deep sense of belonging and empathy. The site that now beholds the magnificent beauty of NorthShore Apparel once symbolized abandonment and destruction.
According to Ghana Web, the location, previously an abandoned gravel pit, was a stark reminder of death and uselessness, much like scars left from repeated C-sections, with each operation bringing new lives into the world. The gravel pit was a hub of sand-winning activity, serving over 160 communities beyond the then Savelugu-Nantong District. Tipper trucks frequently carried full loads of sand away, as the site contributed to the construction of houses, storerooms, farmhouses, and schools.
During the rainy season, the site transformed into pools of water, resembling potholes on the Tamale-Bolga trunk road. For rural children, these pools were perfect for learning and perfecting swimming skills. Despite the life it once supported, the pit was a brutal and compromising source of livelihood.
The transformation into NorthShore Apparel Ltd. marks a significant shift. The site is now a sustainable, compassionate, and environmentally conscious zero-waste, regenerative apparel manufacturing hub. This project, led by Alhaji Nurideen Mohammed and his team, represents the reimagining and remaking of history. It showcases how something once perceived as dead and discarded can be reborn with new life and potential.
