Trailer Brake Failure Causes Major Collision at Asokwa Overpass

Asokwa: Three people have sustained critical injuries after a fully-loaded trailer reportedly suffered brake failure and crashed into eight vehicles at the Asokwa overpass in the Ashanti Region. Eyewitnesses say the trailer was travelling from Anloga Junction towards Ahodwo Roundabout when it allegedly developed a brake fault causing the accident.

According to Ghana Web, the incident took place on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, involving multiple vehicles caught in traffic along the same stretch. The vehicles impacted included a Toyota Santa Fe, Honda CR-V, Toyota Corolla, Nissan SUV, Kia Morning, Toyota pickup, Mitsubishi saloon car, and the trailer itself.

Kwame Mensah, the driver of the Toyota Santa Fe, recounted the harrowing experience: 'All I saw was the trailer pushing my car. My vehicle then rammed into the one in front, which also hit another vehicle, creating a chain collision. Fortunately, a streetlight pole helped stop the trailer; otherwise, the situation could have been far worse.' Mensah noted that, fortunately, there were no fatalities recorded.

However, injuries were sustained by two of the five occupants in Mensah's vehicle, along with a roadside hawker. All injured individuals have been transported to the hospital for immediate medical attention. The Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department, MTTD, has commenced investigations at the scene, where the damaged vehicles have yet to be cleared, leading to significant traffic congestion.
