Cape coast: Nana Antwi Agyei Brempong II, the Atwimahene, has called upon traditional authorities and opinion leaders in the community to rejuvenate traditional values to combat the growing issue of indiscipline among the youth. He emphasized that the decline in moral standards is closely tied to the erosion of traditional values that historically guided societal behavior.
According to Ghana News Agency, Nana Antwi Agyei Brempong highlighted that African society has long been founded on strong cultural and moral principles that prioritize respect, discipline, and responsibility. He noted that these values were traditionally taught at home and reinforced by the broader community and educational institutions, providing the youth with a firm moral compass.
Nana Antwi Agyei Brempong explained that historically, parents, elders, and community leaders played significant roles in molding children's behavior. Misconduct was promptly addressed, and children were made aware of the consequences of their actions early on. For instance, misbehavior in school was met with immediate repercussions the following day, he illustrated.
He further mentioned that traditional teachings, such as proverbs, folktales, and taboos, were instrumental in instilling discipline, offering valuable life lessons that were both cultural and practical. However, he observed a significant shift in modern times, with technology, social media, and urban lifestyles diluting the traditional systems that once regulated behavior. This has led to many young individuals being more influenced by external trends than cultural values.
Nana Antwi Agyei Brempong noted that this shift has resulted in increased disrespect for authority, poor behavior in schools, and engagement in social vices. The weakening of the extended family system has also exacerbated the issue, as children now grow up with limited guidance from relatives who once played active roles in their upbringing.
He stressed that the decline in moral values poses challenges for parents and teachers who are struggling to maintain discipline, with reports of misconduct and bad behavior in schools becoming more frequent. He asserted that traditional values remain crucial in nurturing responsible citizens and urged society to reembrace them.
Nana Agyei Brempong called on parents to take a more active role in instilling discipline at home through clear rules, proper guidance, and consistent correction. School authorities should also enhance moral and civic education to reinforce discipline among students, with teachers serving as role models and ensuring consistent rule enforcement.
He concluded that reviving traditional beliefs and practices offers a practical solution to the increasing issue of youth indiscipline, advocating for a blend of cultural wisdom and modern education to foster a nurtured, disciplined, respectful, and responsible generation.
