Accra: The Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, alongside the Minister for Transport, Bukare Mikpe, visited the surviving victims of the recent attack on Ghanaian tomato traders in Burkina Faso. The visit took place at the 37 Military Hospital, where the injured traders are currently receiving treatment.
According to Ghana Web, the Ministers were accompanied by the Deputy Trade Minister and directors from the Ministry. They met with the two survivors, a male and a female, who sustained injuries during the attack. The purpose of the visit was to show solidarity with the victims, assess their condition, and provide encouragement during their recovery process.
In a media briefing following the visit, Ofosu-Adjare expressed concern over the incident and highlighted the need to enhance local tomato production in Ghana. She stressed that improving domestic tomato cultivation could mitigate the risks faced by traders traveling abroad for supplies. The Minister pledged the government's support in developing year-round tomato farming to decrease reliance on imports and bolster food security.
Ofosu-Adjare articulated the government's objective to enable continuous tomato growth within Ghana, thereby reducing the necessity for traders to venture beyond national borders. She also praised the medical staff for their dedication to the victims' recovery and encouraged them to maintain their high standard of care.
Brigadier General R. Naab, Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the hospital, expressed gratitude for the Ministers' visit. He assured them that the injured traders were making progress in their recovery and would continue to receive optimal medical treatment.
