TMA Waste Management Department works on market sewer lines

Tema, Staff of the Waste Management Department of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) has carried out repair works on defective portions of the sewer lines in the community one market.

It has become a normal spectacle for sewer lines and wastewater chambers passing through the market to overflow leading to gushing out of fecal matter and other materials.

Series of such defects occurred in the Tema Central Business District, which led to the closure of few shops.

Mr Frank Asante, Public Relations Officer of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly, updating the Ghana News Agency on the progress of work said the Sewer Maintenance Team of the Assembly’s Waste Management Department had spent days working to unravel the cause of the frequent sewer challenges.

He said now the sewer problem was fixed to the satisfaction of both traders, and the public, adding that Mr Yohane Amarh Ashitey, Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive had inspected the work done.

He said the MCE expressed worry over the inappropriate use of the sewer system, where some citizens dumped solid waste into the sewer chamber, impeding the free flow of liquid waste within the pipes.

The MCE appealed to residents to desist from such acts, while calling on the Assembly and unit committee members to sensitise them against stuffing the lines with foreign materials such as pads, dresses, cement blocks, and condoms.

He also called on stakeholders, especially the media, to join forces with the Assembly to sensitise both residents and visitors to the Metropolis to appreciate the effect of putting such materials into the sewer lines.

The PRO indicated that the MCE expressed gratitude to the Danish Government for their support to the Assembly through the Strategic Sector Cooperation (SSC) built the capacity of the Assembly’s staff to be able to fix the issues in real-time.
