Accra: Ghanaian actress and fashionista Nana Akua Addo has entered the ongoing discussion regarding fashion choices at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards red carpet. She emphasizes that attendees should have the freedom to express themselves rather than being judged or restricted by themes.
According to Ghana Web, Nana Akua Addo, known as one of Ghana's boldest fashion voices, addressed the criticism directed at several celebrities for their red carpet appearances, which often deviated from the prescribed themes. Addo mentioned on United Showbiz on UTV that she has never adhered to a red carpet theme and does not plan to start.
"I am not someone who sticks to red carpet themes. I have never followed a theme. Because with me, I feel that fashion is a way to express yourself. And I feel like themes are like someone telling you what to do. If you say the theme is black, I will wear red because I want to be free," she stated.
The actress highlighted that fashion's true purpose is to celebrate diversity rather than enforce uniformity. She called for more understanding and curiosity when evaluating people's red carpet choices, suggesting that unique fashion decisions often have personal significance.
"In the fashion world, it is to celebrate diversity, not box you. If you get to the carpet, someone will ask you what you are wearing and why. Sometimes, what the person wears may not make sense, but when he or she explains the motivation, you will finally understand. Someone may have gone through something and wore a particular colour as a statement," she explained.
Nana Akua Addo acknowledged the importance of guidance but insisted that the TGMAs is not the appropriate platform for judging fashion. "We should allow them to express themselves, but then we should guide them. And I don't think the TGMAs is the platform to judge fashion," she concluded.
