Tema: Residents of Tema and Ashaiman recently participated in a complimentary oral health screening organized by the Dental Department of Tema General Hospital as part of World Oral Health Day activities. The exercise aimed at reaching approximately 5,000 individuals, focused on promoting oral hygiene awareness while offering direct screening services to the community.
According to Ghana News Agency, the week-long celebration involved community education, school outreach programs, and complimentary dental check-ups for students and residents within the hospital's vicinity. Dr. Ann Boateng, a Medical Officer at the Dental Department, highlighted the importance of this year's theme, 'A Happy Mouth is a Happy Life,' in fostering preventive oral care.
Dr. Boateng noted that oral health is a crucial yet frequently overlooked aspect of general health, emphasizing the necessity of campaigns that encourage early detection and treatment of dental issues. She pointed out that many Ghanaians neglect regular dental visits, often seeking help only when in severe pain, which can lead to complications avoidable by routine screenings.
She advocated for consistent oral hygiene practices like daily tooth brushing, using fluoride toothpaste, and biannual dental check-ups. Dr. Boateng also mentioned that good oral hygiene not only prevents dental diseases but also supports overall health, as poor oral conditions are linked to systemic illnesses.
Additionally, Dr. Boateng, who serves as the Chairperson of the World Oral Health Day Planning Committee at Tema General Hospital, expressed concern about the growing use of unqualified practitioners, known as 'quack doctors.' She warned against seeking treatment from untrained individuals due to potential health risks and urged the public to consult licensed professionals.
She also cautioned against using harsh, unapproved teeth-whitening substances that could damage enamel, advising that cosmetic dental procedures should be performed under professional guidance.
Pastor Ernest Yeboah Addo from Action Chapel, Tema Community Two, who partook in the screening, praised the timely initiative and highlighted the need for increased public education, especially in basic schools, to ensure children understand proper oral hygiene practices from an early age.
