Accra: Teachers in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality have commenced an industrial action in protest against the alleged assault of three teachers by military personnel during an anti-galamsey operation at Adiewoso M/A Basic School.
According to Ghana Web, the strike action follows a two-week ultimatum issued by the Ghana National Association of Teachers after the April 30, 2026, incident, which reportedly involved the assault of three teachers and a civilian by soldiers in the Adiewoso community. The teacher unions claim authorities have failed to act on demands for investigations, justice for the affected teachers, and compensation.
As part of the protest, teachers across the municipality will wear red armbands and observe a sit-down strike from Tuesday, May 26, 2026. The unions have warned that teaching and learning activities will be completely suspended from June 1 if their concerns remain unresolved.
GNAT earlier condemned the alleged assault as 'barbaric and inhumane,' stating that the teachers identified themselves and presented valid union identity cards but were still subjected to beatings by the military personnel. The association subsequently called on the Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Police Service, and Ghana Education Service, as well as the Ministries of Defence and Interior, to investigate the incident and sanction those responsible.
Teacher unions say the industrial action will continue until concrete steps are taken to ensure justice and the safety of teachers in the municipality.
