Takoradi, Feb. 04, GNA – Mr Abdul Munmin Issah, Chief Executive of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis was on Friday granted bail in the sum of GH¢100,000 with three sureties by the Takoradi Circuit Court A, to reappear on Thursday, February 17.
The court, presided over by Mr Michael Cudjoe Ampedu, granted the accused bail, after he pleaded not guilty to verbal assault of a public officer, offensive conduct, and disturbing public peace.
Police Superintendent Emmanuel Basintele prosecuting, told the court that on Wednesday February 2, at about 20:30 hours, the complainants who are Police Officers were at post at the Police Snap Checkpoint at the Kwasimintsim cemetery when the accused, then driving a Nissan Pajaro with the registration number, GE 5651-20, pulled up from the Takoradi direction of the road.
He said the complainants signalled the accused to stop but he failed to do so and nearly knock down one of the Police Officers who were on duty at the check point.
The prosecution said the complainants confronted the accused, he became offended and verbally abused them with words like, “stupid, ugly, I will beat you to death, do you know me? I will transfer you to Enchi”
Superintendent Basintele said the complainants called for reinforcement from the night patrol team who came and identified the accused as the MCE of Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis. He was then allowed to go home to report to the Police CID at 10.am the next day.
He said the accused was, however, arrested at 1245 hours on Thursday and charged with the three offenses.
Granting bail, the Presiding Judge said the bail sum and other bail conditions were to serve as a deterrent to others and that no one was above the law.
He said there should be no circumstance that anyone would obstruct the Police or any security agency from performing their duties, adding, “we are not safe if there is no security.”
The accused was represented by three lawyers.
