Stephanie Benson Recounts Life-Threatening Surgery Experience

Sanaa:Ghanaian-British singer Stephanie Benson has shared her harrowing experience following surgery to remove both of her breasts due to a cancer diagnosis.

According to Ghana Web, Benson spoke about the challenges she faced during an interview on Hitz FM on October 7, 2026. She revealed that the decision to undergo a double mastectomy was particularly difficult as her left breast was primarily affected, and reconstruction attempts led to further complications.

Benson recounted that the surgery lasted approximately 34 hours and she nearly lost her life during the process. She described the situation as a tough journey, especially when a post-surgery complication caused fluid to accumulate in her chest, impairing her ability to breathe.

She credited a Malaysian nurse for noticing the worsening condition and alerting the doctors, who had left for the day. The nurse's actions, along with her prayers, were pivotal in Benson's survival as doctors returned to perform emergency procedures, including clearing muscle from her stomach and removing a bone from her chest.

Despite the severity of her condition, Benson expressed gratitude for her survival and maintained a positive attitude throughout her recovery. She actively supported other women undergoing similar experiences, encouraging them to remain optimistic.

Benson emphasized the importance of focusing on survival rather than the loss of her breasts, drawing strength from having her children around during recovery. Her mother's death from breast cancer reinforced her resolve to prioritize life over grieving physical changes.

Her experience has fueled a commitment to help other women feel comfortable with their bodies, particularly when dealing with cancer, and to empower them to make life-preserving choices for their families.
