Accra: Following the devastating floods that swept through Accra and several parts of Ghana on June 29, 2026, fresh concerns have emerged over the structural condition of the Alajo Bridge. In a video sighted by GhanaWeb on July 30, 2026, Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), ADO-1 Alex King Nartey, described the current state of the bridge as 'very dilapidated'.
According to Ghana Web, Nartey indicated that the bridge is not on the verge of collapse but emphasized its dire condition, urging for urgent attention due to its frequent usage. He highlighted the visible cracks and slanted structure of the bridge, warning of the potential risks if another major flood occurs.
"You can see visible cracks on the bridge. It's very, very slanted and can pose a very serious risk. It's a ticking time bomb which requires attention," Nartey stated. He appealed to the relevant authorities to inspect and rehabilitate the bridge promptly to prevent any potential disaster.
Nartey expressed concerns about the damage and underscored the necessity for immediate action to ensure public safety. He warned that another flood, similar to the one experienced recently, could severely compromise the bridge's integrity.
The concerns arise exactly one month after the heavy rains that triggered widespread flooding across Accra and other parts of the country on June 29, 2026, renewing calls for authorities to assess critical infrastructure affected by the disaster.
