Accra: Mr Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, has reaffirmed Parliament's commitment to transparency, accountability, and open governance, emphasising the media's crucial role in Ghana's democratic development. Speaking at the Parliament Media Soiree and Recognition Night 2025, Mr Bagbin acknowledged the Parliamentary Press Corps as a vital link between Parliament and the public.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Bagbin stated that "a free, professional, and independent media remains central to informed citizenship, public confidence, and effective democratic oversight." This statement was issued by Mr David Sebastian Damoah, the Director of Media Relations, Parliament, and copied to the Ghana News Agency on Tuesday.
The statement noted that the Speaker commended journalists for their dedication to accurate and ethical reporting amidst challenges like misinformation and digital media demands. The event honored outstanding contributions across media platforms, highlighting storytelling's importance in simplifying complex legislative processes.
Awards recognized excellence, integrity, and innovation in parliamentary reporting, reinforcing the media's watchdog role and channeling diverse citizen voices. Among the award winners were Best Print Journalist, Mr Ernest Kofi Adu of Daily Guide; Best Radio and TV Journalist, Mr Kwaku Asante of Joy News; Best Radio and TV Journalists (Twi), Mr Emmanuel Akorli of Peace FM; and Best Online Journalist, Ms Elsie Appiah-Osei of Ghana News Agency.
Additional accolades went to Best Social Media Journalist, Mr Frank Bruce of Odikro Media; Best Television Camera Person, Mr Paul Egbenya of CitiFM/Channel One; and Public Service Broadcasting, Ms Racheal Quartey of Ghana Television. The Speaker and the Clerk of Parliament, Mr Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, received special citations for supporting press freedom and fostering a collaborative environment for the press corps.
