Songotra-T’s Impact on Ghana’s Cowpea Sector: A Transformative Force

Nyankpala: For years, cowpea farming in northern Ghana was a gamble, fraught with erratic rainfall and pest invasions. Farmers invested heavily in seeds and pesticides, only to see their efforts thwarted by nature. However, a quiet revolution is underway, transforming the country's cowpea sector, thanks to the genetically modified cowpea variety, Songotra-T.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Abdulai Mohammed, a cowpea farmer from Nyankpala, has entirely shifted to Songotra-T after witnessing its benefits over conventional varieties. He reports fewer pesticide applications and higher yields, allowing him to harvest twice within a single rainy season. Inspired by his success, many farmers in the community are now adopting Songotra-T, led by influential figures like Madam Suweiba Abdallah, who have become ambassadors for the variety.

The adoption of Songotra-T is widespread, with thousands of farmers embracing its promise of higher yields, reduced pesticide use, and lower production costs. In just two years since its release, Songotra-T has become a beacon of hope for farmers battling natural challenges and rising production costs.

The significance of Songotra-T extends beyond individual farms. Dr. Jerry Nboyine, a Research Scientist at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research-Savanna Agricultural Research Institute (CSIR-SARI), highlighted its rapid adoption. By 2025, more than 5,000 kilograms of seed were sold, supporting over 500 acres of cultivation. With conservative yield estimates, these farms are expected to produce approximately 300,000 kilograms of cowpea grain.

The CSIR-SARI has already produced around 12,000 kilograms of foundation seed, capable of generating about 600,000 kilograms of certified seed. This certified seed could support cultivation on over 60,000 acres, producing approximately 24 million kilograms of cowpea grain by 2028. This marks a shift from reliance on imported cowpea to potentially exporting surplus production.

Songotra-T's benefits also include fewer pesticide applications, reducing production costs and chemical exposure for farmers. This promotes public health and lowers national healthcare expenses related to pesticide-related illnesses. The variety, resistant to the Maruca pod borer, flourishes under unpredictable climatic conditions, making it a climate-smart innovation.

The challenge now lies in ensuring accessibility to Songotra-T seeds for every farmer. Dr. Nboyine emphasizes the importance of expanding seed distribution networks and increasing public awareness. CSIR-SARI's ongoing research aims to develop additional genetically modified cowpea varieties, targeting other agricultural challenges.
