So Near, Yet So Far: Ghana’s Athletes and the Agony of the Final

Glasgow: Ghanaian athletes recorded mixed results on Day Seven of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. On July 30, 2026, most athletes failed to secure qualification to the medal stages, with only one booking a place in the final. According to Ghana Web, Joseph Paul Amoah stormed to victory in the men's 200m semi-final (Heat 2), clocking a season's best of 20.24 seconds, keeping alive hopes of winning a medal in the final. However, it was unfortunate for his colleague James Dadzie, who placed fourth in the men's 200m semi-final (Heat 1), clocking 20.52 seconds to end his medal hopes. Mustapha Bokpin finished seventh in the men's 200m semi-final (Heat 3), recording 20.65 seconds, thereby missing out on qualification. In the women's 100m hurdles final, Evonne Britton finished seventh with a time of 13.10 seconds, while Nigeria's Tobi Amusan claimed bronze in 12.60 seconds. After qualifying for the final, Britton had expressed confidence ahead of the race, stating, "We are going to the final. I'm going to meet Tobi Amusan again. It's nothing new." So far, Zinabu Issah remains Ghana's only medallist, having won a silver, as the Games head toward conclusion on August 2, 2026.
