Nkwanta: The Police have apprehended seven individuals pertaining to a tumultuous disturbance which resulted in one fatality at the Nkwanta South Municipality in the Oti Region. This information was divulged to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in a statement issued by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Mr John Nchor, the Oti Regional Public Relations Officer.
According to Ghana News Agency, The statement identified the apprehended suspects as Mr Misere Adebo, Mr Atinka Kwaku, Mr Asata Kabore, Mr Bisa Kwabena, Nana Bruce, Gideon Adjei, and Afriyie Kwame. According to the release, these individuals, alongside others, were involved in the commotion, which emerged during a traditional festivity in Nkwanta. This confrontation led to the tragic death of an individual and injuries to several others. The police report further disclosed that five individuals sustained gunshot wounds during the fracas, while numerous houses and commercial establishments were incinerated. The remains of the deceased individual have been moved to the Nkwanta Government Hospital, where they will undergo an autopsy. The suspects are presently in detention, aiding the ongoing investigations, with endeavors in place to apprehend other individuals connected to the incident. Following the unrest, peace has been restored in Nkwanta, and the local security apparatus has been fortified with the additional deployment of military personnel. The disturbances were triggered by conflicts between the Adele, Challa, and Akyode tribes over ritual rites meant to usher in the 2023 annual Yam Festival of the Akyode group. This clash led to the destruction and burning of many houses and commercial properties.
