Accra: The Adabraka District Court has remanded Abraham Newton Awundok, a security guard, for the alleged murder of an elderly couple, Dr. Jesse Amuah and Mrs. Elizabeth Esi Amuah, whose bodies were discovered in a septic tank at their residence in Asylum Down, Accra.
According to Ghana News Agency, Awundok, employed by a private security firm nearby, had become familiar with the couple since January 2026, assisting them with domestic tasks for a fee. The prosecution revealed that a dispute over payment for his services escalated when Mrs. Amuah offered him toiletries instead of cash on March 22, 2026. Awundok's insistence on being paid reportedly led to a confrontation and further altercations the following day.
The court was informed that on March 23, 2026, after finishing his duties, Awundok demanded GHS1,500 from Mrs. Amuah, which led to a heated exchange. In retaliation for being insulted by Mrs. Amuah, Awundok allegedly attacked her with a pestle. When Dr. Amuah intervened, he was reportedly assaulted with a kitchen knife and cement concrete, resulting in fatal injuries to both.
Awundok allegedly fled the scene in the couple's vehicle, taking their phones and valuables. On March 24, 2026, he reportedly returned to hide the bodies in a 'Ghana must Go' bag, which he dumped in the septic tank, later sealing it with cement. The investigation revealed that he sold one of the stolen phones and gave the vehicle to his sister for ridesharing purposes.
The couple's absence prompted a missing persons report by their family on April 30, 2026, leading police to the grim discovery. A post-mortem conducted on May 7, 2026, confirmed severe head injuries as the cause of death. Awundok was apprehended in Dubai on August 30, 2026, following a police-led manhunt. He confessed to acting out of anger and requested forgiveness during interrogation.
Awundok faces two counts of murder, with the court adjourning proceedings to September 21, 2026.
