Accra- The 2018 Standard Chartered (SC) Bank Ghana Limited Road to Anfield football tourney, is set to take place on Saturday, March 24, at the Lizzy Sports Complex.
The SC tournament is an international five-a-side football competition hinged on the bank’s Liverpool FC sponsorship, which offers the opportunity for Standard Chartered to reinforce its partnership with the five-time European champions.
Twenty teams from the media and corporate institutions including TV3, EIB, Multi TV, have registered to partake in the annual tournament.
This year’s competition would see the winners of the Ghana Tournament automatically receiving an all-expenses paid trip to Anfield, the home of Liverpool FC in the English Premier League and a chance to take part in a once in a lifetime opportunity to play in a soccer tournament with other seven winners from SC Markets.
Ahead of the main event, the SC Bank organised a football drill for girls and selected players from the Kotobabi 11, 5, and 7, which saw former Liverpool goalkeeper Sander Westerveld taking the players through the basic rudiments in football at the Kotobabi Wembley Park in Accra.
The Head of Corporate Affairs Brand and Marketing of Standard Chartered Bank Ghana Limited, Asiedua Addae explained that, the Goal girls is one of Standard Chartered global community engagement programmes that focuses on using a combination of sports and life skills training, to empower and equip adolescent girls.
In an interview with the GNA Sports, Westerveld said that he was impressed with the play of the girls adding that, with their quality of play, some can get a place in the national women’s team.
The girls really surprised with me their level of play. This a young team and I believe that, they take their training serious and focused, they will reach far if they want to take up a career in football. There are really good and quality players here. I’m very impressed.
The last two editions saw GNPC and a Nigeria select side representing the region at the Global tournament in the UK and this year’s tournament promises equal excitement.
