Accra: A revised curriculum for Kindergarten to Junior High School education is set to be formally presented to the Ministry of Education on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, for onward submission to President John Mahama. The policy will subsequently be reviewed by the Cabinet and Parliament for approval.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister of Education, made this announcement during his session at the Government Accountability Series Press Conference held at the Presidency in Accra. He emphasized that the curriculum revision aims to ensure a smart start for students by integrating technology, science, engineering, and mathematics into the foundational education system.
Mr. Iddrisu highlighted that foundational learning is critical as it is where literacy, numeracy, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills are developed. He acknowledged that Ghana has historically focused more resources on secondary education rather than basic education. President Mahama is committed to addressing this imbalance by reallocating resources towards foundational basic education.
The Minister noted that revising the education curriculum is one of the government's most significant decisions, with the National Curriculum Review Agency (NACA) responsible for the task. The new curriculum is expected to introduce coding, electronics, artificial intelligence, and TVET into basic education, with responsibility being a core component.
Mr. Iddrisu also mentioned that the government has increased spending at the Basic Education level through improved competition grants, ensuring timely release of funds. He reported payments amounting to over GH64 million, with an additional GH60 million allocated to support the competition grant.
