Tema: Mr. Charles Amos, the Assembly Member for the Padmore Area in the Tema metropolis, has called on residents to cooperate with Ms. Ebi Bright, the Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), in her mission to enhance the area's aesthetics. Mr. Amos emphasized the importance of allowing the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) to perform its duties without hindrance.
According to Ghana News Agency, the appeal follows a recent demolition of unauthorized structures within the metropolis. This action has stirred strong emotions among the affected residents. Mr. Amos clarified that the demolition is part of a broader initiative by the TMA to restore order, improve sanitation, and ensure safety within the city. He noted that residents had been repeatedly informed and warned to remove unauthorized structures on public lands, waterways, and walkways. Despite these warnings, many occupants failed to comply, leaving the assembly with no choice but to enforce regulations.
The MCE has launched a decisive campaign against illegal developments, employing heavy machinery, including excavators, to eliminate unauthorized structures. Mr. Amos stressed the MCE's determination and consistency in her decisions, urging residents to heed instructions and adhere to assembly directives.
He encouraged residents to perceive the demolition exercise not as a punitive measure but as a necessary step towards protecting the collective interests of the metropolis. He explained that illegal structures often obstruct drainage systems, leading to flooding and posing risks to lives and property, especially during rainy seasons. Allowing such developments to persist undermines long-term planning and sustainable development in Tema.
Meanwhile, at the demolition site at Community One Site One, several residents expressed their anger and disappointment as their structures were dismantled. Some affected residents claimed they relied on the demolished structures for their livelihoods and considered the exercise harsh. Others argued that they had not been provided with sufficient time to relocate or find alternatives.
The Assembly Member urged residents to collaborate in building a safer, cleaner, and more organized city for both current and future generations.
