Kumasi: The Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) has called on residents, institutions, and organisations across the region to proudly wear Kente as Ashanti Kente Week officially gets underway.
According to Ghana News Agency, the week-long cultural celebration, which began on Monday, March 23, and will run until Tuesday, March 31, 2026, forms part of activities marking Ghana Month and AshantiFest 2026. In a press release issued in Kumasi and signed by the Chief Director, Mr Michael Owusu Amoako, on behalf of the Regional Minister, the RCC emphasised the need for active participation through the adornment of Kente, a fabric deeply rooted in the identity, history, and artistry of the Ashanti people.
The Council encouraged government institutions, corporate bodies, and public service establishments to incorporate Kente into their daily attire throughout the week. It noted that this could include wearing full Kente cloth or integrating Kente-inspired designs into clothing and accessories such as scarves, ties, ribbons, and lapel pins.
Religious institutions have also been urged to participate by encouraging congregants to dress in Kente or Kente-inspired outfits during worship services within the period. The RCC suggested that churches, mosques, and other faith-based organisations could climax their participation between Friday, March 27, and Sunday, March 29.
According to the statement, the initiative aims to promote indigenous traditions, foster cultural pride, and support local craftsmanship, while reinforcing the significance of Kente as a globally recognised symbol of Ghanaian heritage. The celebration will climax with a grand durbar on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at the Kumasi Cultural Centre, organised in collaboration with the Manhyia Palace. The event is expected to feature traditional performances, a food fair, and a vibrant music and jama festival showcasing the richness of Ashanti culture.
The RCC expressed optimism that strong public participation, particularly through the wearing of Kente, would deepen cultural appreciation, boost economic opportunities for local artisans, and position the Ashanti Region as a key destination for cultural tourism.
