Accra: The government has appointed Professor Mark Adom-Asamoah as the foundation Vice Chancellor of the University of Engineering and Agricultural Sciences (UEAS) in Bunso. Professor Adom-Asamoah, a distinguished Fulbright Fellow and Commonwealth and British Council Scholar, is expected to lead the new university's mission of bolstering Ghana's engineering, agriculture, research, and innovation capacities.
According to Ghana News Agency, Professor Adom-Asamoah is the immediate-past Provost of the College of Engineering at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and a Fellow of the Ghana Institution of Engineering. His extensive experience positions him to anchor UEAS's vision, which is set to launch officially in October 2026 with support from the Korean Government.
Professor Adom-Asamoah's career spans over 30 years at KNUST, where he has held various leadership roles, including Acting Pro Vice Chancellor, Dean of Faculty of Civil and Geo-Engineering, and Head of the Department of Petroleum Engineering. His tenure as Provost was marked by the introduction of multiple undergraduate and postgraduate programs, highlighting his commitment to expanding academic opportunities.
He has significantly contributed to KNUST's development by securing substantial funding for the College of Engineering, including $17.4 million for World Bank Africa Centres of Excellence. His leadership extended to transforming the KNUST Technology Consultancy Centre into a UNESCO Category Two Centre for Excellence in Manufacturing, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship.
Internationally, Professor Adom-Asamoah has engaged in academic and research activities at renowned institutions such as Arizona State University, Georgia Institute of Technology, and the University of Bristol. His research focuses on structural materials, steel design, and seismic behavior, contributing to practical engineering solutions and safety standards.
Professor Adom-Asamoah's expertise in fostering industry-academia collaborations is evidenced by establishing the College of Engineering Endowment Fund, creating research chairs, and forming partnerships with key organizations. His academic credentials include a PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Bristol and an MSc in Structural Steel Design from the University of London.
He has served on numerous accreditation and advisory panels and contributed to initiatives such as the Commonwealth Scholarships Commission Alumni Advisory Panel and the TUNING AFRICA II PROJECT. His governance roles have included membership on the councils of several universities and engineering institutions in Ghana.
Professor Adom-Asamoah's prolific academic output includes over 90 peer-reviewed publications, underscoring his commitment to advancing engineering education and practice.
