Accra: President John Dramani Mahama has issued a stern warning to suspected criminals against attacking police and other security personnel, emphasizing that such actions would be met with a decisive response. He highlighted that certain criminal elements are deliberately targeting and killing officers and made it clear that these acts would not be tolerated.
According to Ghana News Agency, the President delivered this warning during the official handover of 100 Nissan Navara Pick-up vehicles to the Ghana Police Service, aiming to enhance its operational capabilities. The President's warning was prompted by observations made during a memorial service for personnel who lost their lives while on duty, with some officers being intentionally killed by suspected criminals.
President Mahama emphasized, "If you shoot any of the Police personnel, we will come after you," further stating that the police would respond forcefully to anyone who harms or injures officers. He highlighted the government's commitment to retooling the Service to improve patrols, boost visibility, and enhance public safety as part of a broader strategy to modernize Ghana's security infrastructure.
The President urged the Police Service to protect, use professionally, and maintain the vehicles diligently, ensuring that every resource is utilized effectively for the benefit of Ghanaians. He also reminded police personnel of their duty to serve the public while upholding human rights.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno stated that the arrival of the vehicles coincides with an evolution in policing, which is becoming more mobile and intelligence-driven. The vehicles are expected to increase police presence, which has been limited for too long, and to reduce fear, insecurity, and lawlessness in communities by being distributed across all police regions.
Mr. Yohuno added that the vehicles would help consolidate the gains made by the Service, promote economic growth and social stability, and support targeted patrols leading to the arrest of dangerous criminals.
