Accra: President John Dramani Mahama has been petitioned to sack the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Dr Randy Abbey. The petition filed by the Good Governance Advocacy Group, Ghana, accused the COCOBOD boss of gross incompetence, arrogance, and intimidation.
According to Ghana Web, the group stated that Dr Abbey has failed to emulate the president's leadership, which has helped improve the livelihoods of many Ghanaians, and cannot continue to hold his position. The document highlights the group's commendation of President Mahama's leadership, contrasting it with Dr Abbey's alleged shortcomings.
The petition, dated February 9, 2026, elaborated on various grievances against Dr Abbey, stating, "Mr President, before touching on the grounds for this nation-saving petition, I wish to warmly commend you on your hard work, servant leadership, and focus on solutions, even though you met a worse economy bequeathed to you by your highly ineffectual predecessors. I must also be quick to add that the results of the best economic indicators so far and the low cost of living for both Ghanaians and foreign residents in Ghana are a testament to your quality of service to Ghana, our motherland."
The petition continued with criticisms of Dr Abbey's management, noting, "Your Excellency, unfortunately, Dr Randy Abbey's COCOBOD management has been characterised by poor leadership choices, incompetence, arrogance, intimidation tactics, misaligned or misplaced priorities, financial mismanagement, questionable renovations, resistance to change, undermining initiatives, and blocking operational improvements, to say the least."
The group urged President Mahama to relieve Dr Abbey of his position with immediate effect, amid COCOBOD's failure to pay arrears owed to cocoa farmers, leaving hundreds of farmers frustrated.
