President Mahama Celebrates Ghana’s Democratic Progress in New Year Message

Accra: President John Dramani Mahama has praised Ghana's democratic achievements in his 2026 New Year message, highlighting the nation's role as a beacon of democracy in Africa. "We in Ghana have proved in 2025 that democracy works, that peaceful transitions of power strengthen us rather than weakens us, and that African solutions to African problems are not just slogans but achievable realities," the President stated during the broadcast on January 1, 2026. According to Ghana News Agency, President Mahama emphasized Ghana's potential to inspire neighboring countries and partners across the continent. He reiterated the importance of unity in building a prosperous Africa and invited global investment in Ghana's transformation, emphasizing mutual benefit rather than charity. The President urged Ghanaians to showcase the possibilities for developing nations when allowed to independently determine their path. The President outlined ambitious goals for 2026, aiming to enhance education by digitalizing schools an d equipping classrooms with 21st-century learning tools. He also announced plans to operationalize Universal Health Coverage through the Free Primary Health Care Programme, ensuring healthcare access for all Ghanaians. Additionally, the Ghana Medical Trust Fund will support individuals with non-communicable diseases. In the agricultural sector, President Mahama committed to achieving food self-sufficiency by transforming agriculture from subsistence farming to a commercial enterprise through mechanization, value addition, and improved market access. He also highlighted environmental goals, aiming for a 30 percent share of renewable energy in Ghana's national energy mix to reduce costs and protect the environment. President Mahama promised to enhance social infrastructure through public-private partnerships for social housing units and pledged to intensify anti-corruption efforts, emphasizing accountability for public funds. He concluded by affirming the implementation of recommendations from the Constitutio n Review Committee to strengthen the 1992 Constitution, further consolidating Ghana's democratic governance.
