President Mahama Allocates GHS1 Billion for National Housing Fund in 2027 Budget

Accra:President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Minister of Finance to allocate GHS1 billion in the 2027 Budget as the government's contribution to a GHS3 billion revolving National Housing Fund (NHF). This announcement was made during the National Conference on Housing Finance in Accra on October 7, 2026.

According to Ghana Web, President Mahama stated that the government’s contribution will be directly placed into the NHF to provide financing for housing in a revolving manner. This initiative aims to make decent and affordable accommodation more accessible for Ghanaians. The NHF has also reduced the mortgage rate to 8.4% as part of the government's efforts to make homeownership more affordable.

The President introduced a new program under the NHF called Easy Rent, designed to alleviate the financial burden of rent advances. The program will pay the rent in advance for workers, who will then repay the amount on a monthly basis, thus avoiding large upfront payments.

President Mahama shared a personal story to highlight the challenges many Ghanaian families face in securing affordable housing. He recounted his own difficulties in finding suitable accommodation in Accra after leaving his father's house to start married life with his wife, Lordina Mahama, due to steep rent advances and extra fees.

In addition, the President emphasized the importance of safety in building standards. He urged the Ministry of Local Government to ensure that buildings comply with safety requirements and called for accountability whenever negligence leads to building collapses, stressing the need for sanctions in such cases.
