Accra: The Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG) has introduced its Disability Policy and inaugurated a National Committee on Disability, emphasizing the importance of disability inclusion within the Church's ministry. This initiative aims to ensure that persons with disabilities are fully involved in every facet of church life and governance.
According to Ghana News Agency, Reverend David Aboagye Danquah, Clerk of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, encouraged all tiers of the Church to actively practice inclusion. He highlighted the need for accessible church infrastructure, including ramps and disability-friendly facilities, and recommended services such as sign language interpretation and large-print bulletins. Rev Danquah stressed the importance of language that does not associate disability with negative connotations.
Rev Danquah emphasized that persons with disabilities should take on leadership roles within the Church, underscoring inclusion as a fundamental aspect of the Church's mission. Mrs. Gertrude Oforiwa Fefoame, National Focal Person on Disability, acknowledged the challenges in implementing the policy but urged for financial and logistical support. She called for budgetary commitments from all levels of the Church.
Mrs. Fefoame detailed strategies such as establishing Disability Committees, conducting training, and collecting data for progress reports. She announced plans for a Presbyterian observance of the National Week of Disability. Reverend Andrew Shardow, National Director of the Department of Church Life and Nurture, highlighted the historical exclusion of persons with disabilities and reaffirmed the Church's dedication to inclusive ministry.
Rev Shardow called on Presbyterians to adopt supportive attitudes and practices toward persons with disabilities. Reverend Ebenezer Acheampong Asiedu, National Chairperson of the Committee on Disability, promised to actively promote disability inclusion and advocated for the elimination of stigma and discrimination. Rev Asiedu urged church leaders to maintain accessible worship spaces and use their platforms to foster inclusion and acceptance.
