Accra: The Executive Director of Peace Watch Ghana, Nyonkopa Daniels, has openly criticized the Majority Caucus and specific NDC MPs for advocating the annulment of the Ayawaso East parliamentary primary, citing allegations of vote-buying.
According to Ghana Web, Daniels contended that the lawmakers urging the cancellation of the results based on inducement accusations are being disingenuous. She suggested that it is unlikely these MPs can convincingly claim they have never offered incentives during their own election campaigns. Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, she accused the MPs of hypocrisy and a lack of genuine commitment to electoral reform. Daniels challenged any MP insisting on annulment to resign their seats to allow fresh elections across the board.
In her discussion with host Kwabena Agyapong, Daniels argued that Baba Jamal is being unfairly singled out despite other candidates allegedly engaging in similar practices. She questioned whether Jamal was the only candidate distributing items or holding a position, highlighting that others also shared motorbikes, money, and other incentives. Daniels called for an end to what she described as hypocrisy among the MPs.
Daniels further urged stakeholders to address the persistent issue of vote-buying instead of targeting individuals. She also expressed concerns about the controversial trend of widows contesting their late husbands' parliamentary seats. Daniels reminded listeners of the NDC's criticism of the NPP during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election, when the term 'bloody widow' was used. She warned that if this trend continues, more spouses might feel compelled to enter Parliament following their husbands' deaths.
