Accra: has launched its Corporate Strategic Plan (2026-2030), a comprehensive roadmap to enhance its efficiency, oversight, and public service delivery. 'The strategic plan envisions an inclusive and proactive Parliament grounded in constitutional principles, guided by evidence-based decision-making,' Mr Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, said on Thursday.
According to Ghana News Agency, the Speaker emphasized that the plan focused on five key areas: legislative management, parliamentary oversight and accountability, parliamentary representation, parliamentary diplomacy, and parliamentary support service. He highlighted the importance of strengthening parliamentary democracy, enhancing transparency, and accountability. Mr Bagbin urged citizens to hold leaders accountable, stating that good governance requires vigilance from all to ensure politicians remain responsible.
Mr Bagbin mentioned that the strategic plan was developed through extensive consultation and collaboration with stakeholders, including civil society and development partners. He described the plan as ambitious and noted that its successful implementation was crucial. The plan has already inspired other parliaments.
Mr Bernard Ahiafor, the First Deputy Speaker and the Chairman of the Steering Committee, stated that the new strategic plan was aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the African Union Agenda 2063, and Ghana's development aspirations. The plan includes an institutional assessment, reaffirming Parliament's vision, mission, and core values, while outlining outcome-oriented programs. These programs aim to strengthen legislative scrutiny, enhance Member of Parliament (MP) capacity, and promote evidence-based lawmaking.
Mr Ahiafor explained that the plan adopts a program-based framework, improving tracking, accountability, and linking actions to strategic objectives. Members of the Steering Committee include Madam Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui, Mr Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Mr Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo, Mr Richmond Edem Kofi Kpotosu, and Mr Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah.
Mrs Patricia Appiagyei, the Deputy Minority Leader, pledged the Caucus's support for the plan's effective implementation. Mr Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader, echoed the importance of wide consultation with the citizenry in developing the plan and assured the Majority Caucus's backing. He emphasized that the plan ensures MPs perform critical roles in passing effective legislation, advocating for constituencies, and holding institutions accountable.
