Accra: Lawyer and NPP member Kwesi Botchway Jnr has stated that the party's disagreement over Chairman Wontumi's conviction is with the legal reasoning behind the judgment and not with the judiciary or the judge who presided over the case. Speaking on Joy Prime, he said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) believes the judgment that resulted in the conviction and sentencing of Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, lacks a legal foundation.
According to Ghana Web, the party's objection relates to the reasoning and conclusions reached by the court. Kwesi Botchway Jnr emphasized, "The NPP's concern is not with the judiciary. The NPP's concern is not with any judge." He further explained that the concern lies with the conclusions and the reasoning, what lawyers refer to as the ratio, of the decision.
He added that the party considers the prosecution to have been politically driven. "It is the position of the NPP that this very decision that led to the conviction and subsequent sentencing of Chairman Wontumi is not grounded in law. It is the position of the party that the entire Wontumi prosecution was shrouded in politics and not law," Botchway Jnr stated.
